The Ha Giang Loop takes you through winding mountain roads, dramatic valleys, waterfalls, traditional villages, and remote areas of northern Vietnam. Whether you’re joining an Easy Rider tour, riding by yourself, or sitting behind a friend, packing light and bringing the right essentials will make your journey much more comfortable.
You don’t need to bring your entire suitcase. In fact, we recommend packing only what you really need for the loop and leaving your larger luggage at Mama’s Homestay, where we can provide complimentary luggage storage for our guests.
Here’s our practical packing guide for the Ha Giang Loop.
Recommended Ha Giang Loop Tours
Looking for the best route for your trip? Check out our popular Ha Giang Loop options:
3 Days 2 Nights Ha Giang Loop – Perfect if you have limited time but still want to experience the highlights.
4 Days 3 Nights Ha Giang Loop – More relaxed, with extra time to enjoy the scenery and local experiences.
5 Days 4 Nights Ha Giang – Cao Bang Loop – A longer adventure combining the highlights of Ha Giang and Cao Bang.
1. Comfortable Clothes for Changing Weather
The weather in the Ha Giang mountains can change quickly. You may start your morning feeling cold, enjoy warm sunshine during the afternoon, and experience rain later in the day.
The best approach is to dress in layers.
T-shirts and Light Clothes
Bring a few comfortable T-shirts and lightweight clothes for daytime. Breathable and quick-drying clothes are especially useful when you spend several hours on the road.
You don't need to pack a different outfit for every day. 2–3 comfortable outfits are usually enough for a short Ha Giang Loop.
Warm Jacket or Fleece
Even if you visit during warmer months, temperatures can feel much cooler in the mountains, especially early in the morning and in higher-altitude areas.
We recommend bringing:
A light fleece or sweater
A windproof jacket
A warmer jacket during the cooler months
Rain Jacket or Poncho
Rain can come unexpectedly in the mountains, so a waterproof jacket or poncho is one of the most useful things you can pack.
If you’re riding a motorbike, choose something that can easily fit over your clothes and keep your upper body and backpack protected.
2. Comfortable Shoes
You’ll spend a lot of time on the road, but the Ha Giang Loop is not only about riding.
You may stop to:
Walk around traditional villages
Visit viewpoints
Explore waterfalls
Walk on small mountain paths
Meet local communities
Explore caves or other natural attractions
A pair of comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes with good grip is ideal.
You can also bring a pair of sandals or flip-flops for relaxing at your homestay after a long day.
3. Bring a Small Backpack
The most important packing tip for the Ha Giang Loop is simple:
Pack light.
A small backpack of around 20–30L is usually enough for your daily essentials.
If you are staying with Mama’s Homestay before your loop, you can leave your larger suitcase or backpack with us and travel with only what you need for the journey.
What to Put in Your Daypack?
We recommend keeping these items easily accessible:
Phone
Wallet
Passport
Sunscreen
Sunglasses
Rain jacket
Water bottle
Snacks
Power bank
Small personal medication
Camera
For valuable items, please keep them secure and avoid carrying unnecessary valuables on the road.
4. Sunscreen and Sunglasses
Even when the weather feels cool, you can still get strong sun exposure while traveling through the mountains.
Don't forget:
High-SPF sunscreen
Sunglasses
Lip balm with SPF
A hat or cap
Sunglasses are especially useful when riding because they can protect your eyes from sunlight, dust, and wind.
5. Water Bottle and Snacks
A reusable water bottle is highly recommended.
You’ll have opportunities to buy drinks and snacks along the route, but having your own water with you is always convenient.
A few easy snacks can also be useful during long stretches between stops:
Nuts
Granola bars
Dried fruit
Chocolate
Crackers
And of course, don’t forget to enjoy the local food along the way!
6. Power Bank and Your Phone
Your phone will probably become your:
Camera
Navigation device
Communication tool
Entertainment
Booking information
So make sure you have enough battery for the day.
A 10,000–20,000 mAh power bank is a great addition to your packing list, especially if you spend most of the day on the road.
If you’re bringing a camera, remember to bring extra batteries and memory cards.
7. Passport, Cash and Important Documents
Passport
International travelers should always carry their passport and any required travel documents.
We recommend keeping your passport in a waterproof pouch or another secure place inside your bag.
Cash
Although you can find ATMs in Ha Giang and some larger towns, cash is still useful when traveling through more remote areas.
Bring some Vietnamese Dong (VND) for:
Snacks and drinks
Local restaurants
Small purchases
Tips
Additional activities
You don't need to carry a huge amount of cash, but having some with you is recommended.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is strongly recommended for your trip to Ha Giang.
Make sure your policy covers the activities you plan to do, especially if you intend to ride a motorbike yourself.
8. Basic Medicine and Personal Medication
Bring any medication that you regularly use during your trip.
A small personal first-aid kit can also be useful and may include:
Plasters
Antiseptic wipes
Basic pain relief
Personal medication
Motion-sickness medication
The Ha Giang Loop has many winding mountain roads, so if you often experience motion sickness, it’s a good idea to prepare medication before starting your trip.
9. Toiletries and Personal Hygiene
You don't need to bring full-size toiletries. Keep things simple and travel-sized.
Useful items include:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Basic skincare
Shampoo and body wash
Hand sanitizer
Wet wipes
Toilet paper or tissues
Quick-dry towel
Most accommodations provide basic amenities, but having a few personal items with you can make the trip more comfortable.
10. Helmet and Riding Gear
If you're joining an Easy Rider tour, your driver will take care of the riding.
If you're riding by yourself, make sure you have the appropriate driving documents and a proper helmet.
For anyone traveling by motorbike, we also recommend:
Comfortable gloves
Sunglasses
Long pants
Closed-toe shoes
A rain jacket
You don't need to bring a professional motorcycle gear setup for a typical Ha Giang Loop, but basic protection and comfortable clothing are important.
11. Driving Documents for Self-Riders
Planning to ride the Ha Giang Loop yourself?
Before your trip, make sure you understand Vietnam's current requirements for legally riding a motorbike.
Bring your relevant:
Passport
Driving licence
International Driving Permit, where applicable
Motorbike rental documents
If you're unsure about the requirements, check with your rental provider or tour operator before starting the loop.
12. A Small Dry Bag or Waterproof Bag
This is a small item that can make a big difference.
Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so having a waterproof dry bag or waterproof pouch is useful for protecting:
Passport
Phone
Camera
Power bank
Wallet
Other electronics
You can also use simple waterproof bags inside your backpack as an extra layer of protection.
13. Mosquito Repellent
Ha Giang is surrounded by mountains, forests, rivers, and rural villages.
Mosquitoes aren't necessarily a problem everywhere, but carrying a small bottle of mosquito repellent can be useful, especially when spending time outdoors in the evening.
14. Camera - But Don't Forget to Put It Down
Of course, you’ll want to take photos.
The Ha Giang Loop is full of incredible landscapes, from mountain passes and deep valleys to rivers, waterfalls, rice fields, and traditional villages.
Bring your:
Smartphone
Camera
GoPro or action camera
Extra batteries
Memory card
But remember to put the camera away sometimes.
Some of the best moments on the Ha Giang Loop happen when you simply stop, look around, and enjoy where you are.
15. What You DON'T Need to Bring
One of the biggest mistakes first-time travelers make is overpacking.
You probably don't need:
A huge suitcase
Lots of different outfits
Full-size toiletries
Heavy hiking equipment
Too many shoes
Expensive valuables
A large amount of cash
A full motorbike repair kit if you're joining an organized tour
Keep it simple. A small backpack with the essentials is enough for most travelers.

The most important things are comfortable clothes, a waterproof layer, good shoes, sunscreen, your phone, some cash, personal medication, and your passport.
Everything else is optional.
More importantly, leave a little space in your bag for the experiences you’ll collect along the way — from sharing a meal with a local family to watching the sun disappear behind the mountains.
Pack light. Ride slow. Stop often. And enjoy the Ha Giang Loop.
